As someone who has always been curious about the world around me, I’ve always been drawn to the field of emergency medical services. There’s something so thrilling about responding to emergencies, providing medical care, and helping others in their time of need. So, when I had the opportunity to volunteer as an EMT-Basic with my local ambulance service, I jumped at the chance.
From day one, I was hooked. The work was challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. I loved the rush of adrenaline that came with responding to calls, and I relished the opportunity to put my medical training into action.
But volunteering in EMS was also about so much more than responding to emergencies. It was about becoming part of a community of people who were all passionate about helping others. We would spend long hours together on the ambulance, sharing stories and laughing together in between calls.
One of my favorite memories from my time volunteering in EMS was when my partner and I responded to a call in the middle of the night. It was dark and quiet, and we had to navigate through a maze of streets to find the right address. When we finally arrived, we found an elderly woman who had fallen and couldn’t get up. We helped her to her feet, made sure she was okay, and then spent the next hour chatting with her and making her laugh. It was a reminder that, even in the midst of an emergency, we could still bring joy and comfort to those we were helping.
Volunteering in EMS has changed my life in so many ways. It’s taught me about the importance of community, of working together to achieve a common goal. It’s shown me that, even in the midst of chaos, there’s always room for kindness and compassion. And it’s given me a sense of purpose that I never knew I was missing.
